ART OF JAZZ MUSIC
Why are jazz music commentary, criticism, and review so important to both, Kansas and American history? Jazz is important to the art of our entire nation because it is the only truly American music and an original art form purely developed here. Jazz is now a worldwide music that originates from the artistic and cultural contributions slaves brought from Africa, melded with European music – creating art that reflects all peoples. Jazz is always modern, diverse, and contemporary. Jazz came from Congo Square in New Orleans, and the Midwest Territory Bands traveling through Kansas along with other states in the region. Jazz venues still range from dive bars to the grandest concert halls of today. Jazz music ranges from accessible blues and pop driven melodic tunes, to technically complex masterpieces and improvised avant garde experimentations. Jazz is state of the art music. Jazz is state of the world music. Jazz Artistry Now is the only Kansas arts magazine that provides another much needed 21st Century publication space for documenting the jazz works, projects, and recordings that are continually being created in our times.

Jazz Artistry Now is a professional new media jazz magazine by Burnett Music Foundation that publishes high quality editorial commentary, articles and objectively reviews jazz albums. Each year thousands of albums are produced and released into the commercial market and many go unrecognized largely due to an archaic industry infrastructure that cannot handle the volume of music produced in the 21st Century. The art of jazz music and journalism are symbiotic, having converged in the early 20th Century.
ARTS INTEGRATION
JAN is a much needed additional source for arts editorial and critical commentary that recognizes both, well-known and emerging recording artist talent alike. There are a limited number of arts publications that objectively cover jazz music in the region.

NEW PARADIGM
The first phases of the Jazz Artistry Now publication include providing another much needed highly selective 21st Century arts platform where modern jazz criticism across the spectrum of various media is engaged.
The prevailing paradigm is stacked against the artist in that the artist pays musicians to perform on their albums, pays a studio to record the music itself, pays a publicist to get the attention of the media, pays a radio promoter to get the record heard over the airwaves, and assumes costs associated with manufacturing and distribution to the commercial marketplace.
In a similar scenario most jazz journalists are compensated by publications that sell advertising as revenue, but that old print publication model of the 20th Century has almost completly faded into oblivion with the advent of the Internet and digital publishing.
It’s easy to see how the “art” often gets lost in this scenario…
As with all areas of the professional jazz industry infrastructure, we believe that our jazz journalists writing for JAN should be compensated fairly for their work as part of a means toward making and maintaining livelihoods and careers.

Recordings are prescreened before review assignments are made.
Jazz Artistry Now only accepts music for review consideration that we consider to be the best representations of jazz artistry now.
JAZZ ARTISTRY NOW PRODUCTS
We do editorial “review quotes” of select recordings we choose to feature unsolicited at no charge, it’s free to have recordings featured like those posted with the “best of…” list.
We also do full album reviews, articles and interviews. We compensate our writers for assignments we select for publication.
NOTES: Reviews are assigned to one of our professional jazz writers by request or at the discretion of JAN.
