KC Area Youth Jazz is a pretty unique youth jazz artist program model that we conceived nearly ten years ago and formally launched in 2019. We wanted to develop a program model that does several relevant things for participants. Namely, (1) creating performances and recordings at a professional-level of original compositions and unique works by master artists on the scene today; (2) teaching and mentoring youth in the business of jazz artistry and how to subsidize a career with relevant profit centers; (3) deliver an artist-level experience to high school age jazz musicians with rigorous elements as to help inform career and higher education decisions before graduation; and, (4) provide an environment where all jazz generations interact with one another, thus teaching that if the modern jazz musical art form is going to remain viable, it is ultimately due to being a community – not a cabal of cliques.
